Before this last decisive special, it is the Australian Toby Price, double winner of the Dakar (2016 and 2019) who leads lead with only 12” ahead of his teammate at KTM Kevin Benavides, winner of the event in 2021.Third at only 1’31” from Price, the American Skyler Howes can also still hope to win the handlebars of his Husqvarna.
Arrived in 31st position of the 13th stage this Saturday, the Argentinian saw his time corrected by the marshals because he had stopped at the edge of the track for more than 20 minutes to provide assistance to his teammate Matthias Walkner, who had fallen heavily in beginning of route. Taken care of by the Dakar medical service, the Austrian complained of back pain. His time updated, Benavides wins the stage, and deprives Michael Docherty (Husqvarana) of his first success on the Dakar. Penalized one minute for speeding in a limited area, Luciano Benavides (Husqvarna), Kevin’s brother, completes the stage podium.
Adrien Van Beveren, who had sacrificed his stage on Friday in the hope of taking advantage of a better starting position this Saturday to climb to the podium, ranks fourth in the stage, 2’5” from the winner. Overall, the Northerner is fourth, 1”20” from the podium and under threat from his teammate Pablo Quintanilla, who is 8” behind his Honda.
