Montpellier: discover the name of the artist and the design of the future tram line 5

We finally know which artist will design the future line 5 of the tramway. It was unveiled this Friday, January 20 at the Jardin des Plantes by Michaël Delafosse, mayor and president of the metropolis and Julie Frêche vice-president in charge of mobility. It is therefore Barthélémy Toguo who was chosen to dress the trains that will connect Clapiers to Lavérune, through the city’s large parks.

Barthélémy Toguo, an artist from Cameroon, was chosen to create the sets for the future tramway line 5 in Montpellier. A very natural line, which connects Clapiers to Lavérune, passing through the surroundings of the city’s large parks. The covering of the trains was unveiled this Friday morning at the Jardin des Plantes by Michaël Delafosse, mayor and president of the metropolis and Julie Frêche, vice-president in charge of mobility. The artist imagined a “leaf of life” around the theme of science and botany. It shows “the diversity of life with the presence of animals and plants. True advocacy in the face of the Anthropocene, his work defends life in its diversity and finds harmony between man and nature”, rejoices Michaël Delafosse.

“The Leaf of Life” by Barthélémy Toguo

Originally from Cameroon, Barthélémy Toguo was trained in the schools of Fine Arts in Abidjan, Grenoble and Düsseldorf. The artist had presented Déluge in 2016 at the Carré Sainte-Anne and was present at the France-Africa Summit in 2021. “The choice of Barthélémy Toguo was obvious because it refers us to the otherness of the world and perfectly traces the identity of Montpellier: namely a city steeped in history, science, research, a city open to new ideas and cosmopolitan traditions”, enthuses the mayor.
