Deadly stampede in Iraq on the sidelines of a Gulf Cup match

According to AFP, citing medical and security sources, one person died and “tens” others were injured Thursday in a stampede outside a stadium in Iraq where the Gulf Cup final is due to take place.

Thousands of ticketless fans thronged the gates of a stadium in Basra, southern Iraq, at dawn, hoping to watch the match between the host country and Oman from 7:00 p.m., when the stampede occurred. “There is one dead and dozens of minor injuries”said a medical source on condition of anonymity, a report confirmed by an official of the Ministry of the Interior.
