Asus ROG Phone 6D review: lots of power… and even endurance

Asus used the same photo setup as the ROG Phone 6 Pro. We therefore find a main sensor of 50 Mpx (the famous Sony IMX766) whose lens opens at f / 1.9, supported by an ultra wide-angle of 13 Mpx (f / 2.2) and a macro module of 5 Mpx.

Here we will compare it to theOppo Find X5, which has a similar wide-angle sensor. The opportunity to see if the ISP of the Dimensity 9000+ gives a real advantage over the ROG Phone 6 Pro.

In good light conditions, the ROG Phone 6D sensor delivers a good result. You will therefore be able to capture beautiful shots during the day. The colors are certainly a little too saturated, but it is still flattering. We do not reach the level of detail or sharpness of the Oppo Find X5, whose rendering seems much more natural, but it is still a good result for a smartphone stamped gaming.

When there is a lack of light, things inevitably get tougher. The level of detail drops and we note the appearance of digital noise. By using digital smoothing sparingly without overexposing the scene, the Find X5 maintains excellent readability and sharpness for nighttime shooting. We therefore no longer play in the same category.

In full definition, the contribution of the 50 Mpx module is notable during the day. The shot still forces a little too much on the contrast, but offers a little more detail and better sharpness. On the other hand, no change is visible in low light.

Oppo incorporates the same 50 Mpx sensor as that of the wide-angle, and uses the pixel binding to deliver a 12.5MP shot. On this daytime comparison, this is clearly felt. The ROG Phone 6D forces smoothing and delivers a saturated rendering, which lacks precision. Even if the general tone of the Find X5 is a little cold for our taste, the level of restitution is much better, especially in terms of sharpness. A quick glance at the color charts will convince you of this.

Unsurprisingly, the gap widens further at night, where the Oppo is one of the best in its class. The ROG Phone 6D can’t get enough detail and the scene starts to blur. Even if we still distinguish the elements – which was not the case on these modules some time ago – the absence of real image processing is seriously felt.

Front module, portrait and video mode

A 12 Mpx sensor is housed in the upper border at the front. It allows you to capture frankly satisfying selfies, especially for a smartphone of this type. The exposure and the level of detail are convincing, even if the competition very often offers more sharpness. Portrait mode works well and isn’t too aggressive, although it can be misled by unruly hair.

The device can film in 8K at 24 fps, but especially in 4K at 60 fps and HDR10 + thanks to its main module. The result is very well made and the electronic stabilization effective. There is therefore a way to capture nice videos with the latter, without benefiting from an exceptional sensor. A good point.
