13 Real Madrid players in turmoil

After the rout in the Spanish Super Cup final, it’s time to take stock. At Real Madrid, several players are concerned to explain the team’s slowdown.

The daily brand draws up a clear statement after the defeat in the last Clasico (3-1). More than half of the workforce is not at the level, has been injured or does not fit into Ancelotti’s plans.

Carvajal, Rüdiger, Valverde, Modric and Camavinga are the players who have been most affected by the World Cup. Mendy still hasn’t returned to his best and there are three injured players who won’t be able to help them. Two of them are starters, Alaba and Tchouaméni, and another, Lucas Vazquez, who isn’t as consistent but was a good fit given Carvajal’s form. Finally, there is the small group of players who are left out by Ancelotti.

Luis Enrique has already sent him to the bench during the World Cup. It must not have been very well for his coach to opt for Marcos Llorente in his place for the round of 16 against Morocco. When he arrived in Madrid, he was again suffering from physical problems and Ancelotti actually booked him for the semi-finals. Against Barça, he confirmed what we thought. The Spaniard is not at the level.

He did not participate in the World Cup, but he deserves his place in this list. Against Barcelona, he was not the worst but he is still far from his best level and Carlo needs him because we see that the alternatives to his position are not more conclusive. He was singled out for his error on Villarreal’s goal in the last league game, but beyond that what the manager needs is for him to regain continuity and defensive solidity .

He’s not the Chelsea player. Alaba’s injury has given him the opportunity to settle in the center of defense in this Supercup, but it did not pass the expected securitynot to mention the mistake that led to Barca’s first goal.

He was the team’s most in-form player until the World Cup break in Qatar. However, he hasn’t been the same since his return from Doha. It was impossible for him to chain the performances as he did in the first part of the season, but he does not show himself as he did before. More eccentric to the right as in the final of the Supercup, it also loses influence and has more difficulty in exploiting its qualities.

He looks very tired. His World Cup was tough as Croatia went almost all the way and at 37 he showed he was human. Against Barça, we saw him suffer and he needs time to recharge his batteries because his presence will be vital for the rest of the season. The proof that he is not 100% and that he needs rest is that he did not start in the semi-final against Valencia.

He’s young and didn’t have many minutes at the World Cup either, where Deschamps played him at left-back. Ancelotti saw in him a solution for these first games after the World Cup in order to rotate the starters and give a boost to the midfield, but the bet proved fruitless. Both against Valencia and in the final, Ancelotti took him off at half-time. He has a lot of desire, but he can’t find his place and was somewhat imprecise against Barça.

Did not play a single minute in this Supercup. Ancelotti said that after the World Cup he was going to have minutes like the rest of the players who stayed at Valdebebas, but it came down to his Copa minutes against Cacereño. Worse still, he didn’t show anything that day. He also hasn’t appeared in the two league games that have been played since the return to competition, against Valladolid and Villarreal. He’s gone again and it would be surprising if there were any other big opportunities for the Belgian.

Nor is it a solution for Ancelotti. He had a few minutes in the Copa against Cacereño and ended up getting injured. The feeling is that even though he recovers and despite Carvajal’s poor form and Lucas Vazquez’s injury, Ancelotti doesn’t see the former Real Madrid player as an option at right-back. He was also on the exit ramp for the winter transfer window.

Appears in Ancelotti’s XI only in extreme emergency situations. The fact that a World Cup is being played in the middle of the season hasn’t opened the door for him to play more at Real Madrid. His contribution is limited to the 17 minutes Carlo gave him in the loss to Celtic in the last Champions League group stage game and the 39 minutes against Cacereño.

One of Real Madrid’s most unsuccessful signings. He has played 25 minutes this season and the longest time he has been on the pitch is 11 minutes against Rayo in Vallecas looking for a desperate equaliser. He is not an option for his coach, but we already knew that.

One of three injured and he has about four weeks of recovery left. This is a serious problem for Ancelotti as he is the starter in central defense and an option on the left of defense with Mendy. He got injured after the game against Villarreal and didn’t travel to Arabia. He is one of the coach’s regulars and had also come to this stage fresher since he did not take part in the World Cup in Qatar.

Another problem for Ancelotti. He paid for his efforts at the World Cup, where he was the most used player by Deschamps, with a muscle injury. In Arabia, the defensive midfielder has been greatly missed since he has taken over this role since the departure of Casemiro. Ancelotti tried out Kroos or Camavinga for this position and even changed the system so that the ex-Monaco player’s absence went unnoticed. Without success.

lucas vazquez

He was injured in the Spanish Supercopa semi-final against Valencia and will also need at least a month to recover from a sprained right ankle. A significant loss for Ancelotti given he is a regular at right-back when Dani Carvajal is out or needs a rest.
